Youngstown City School District is proud to announce the appointment of Devlin Culliver as the new head football coach of East High School.
Culliver, originally from Youngstown, has been a successful head coach for over 20 years in the Cleveland area. He served as a head coach for East Cleveland Shaw, Warrensville Heights, Maple Heights, and, most recently, Elyria High School. Before being hired as coach at Elyria, the team was 0-10 that previous season. During his tenure, the Elyria Pioneers made the state playoffs. He has a proven record of being a strong coach and enhancing the lives of young men under his tutelage.
East High School Athletic Director, Tanisha Franklin, said the school is excited to welcome Culliver. She added, "We look forward to Mr. Culliver joining our Golden Bear Family. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and experience to our football program, school, and community."
In addition to serving as a coach, Culliver will be an Academic Facilitator at East. Culliver, who has also been a teacher for over 20 years, will work with the administrative team and teachers on increasing reading and writing skills across the entire curriculum.
"Mr. Culliver brings a wealth of experience that will enhance East High School's football program," said East High School Principal Debra Campbell. Alongside that is supporting academics first for all of our scholars."
Culliver holds educational licenses in Art, Career Based Intervention, and a K-12 Reading Endorsement. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School and received his undergraduate degree from Ohio University, where Culliver earned a football scholarship and lettered all four years.
"I feel this moment has come full circle for me," Culliver said. "My career ultimately has led me back home, where I will have the opportunity to be involved with scholars both on and off the field. I'm thankful to the Youngstown City School District and East High School for welcoming me, and I anticipate our first game of the season."
Youngstown City School District Superintendent, Justin M. Jennings, said the district is more than happy to have Culliver be a part of the YCSD Family. He also noted, āI am elated with our choice with an outstanding football pedigree with a proven record of winning and helping young men grow. It's a bonus also to have an experienced teacher with multiple academic certifications."
